The Winterless North – Tutukaka Activities in Winter
If you’re looking for a holiday destination this winter which is affordable as well as fun, then its time to consider the Tutukaka coast.
On Northland’s stunning East coast, Tutukaka is perfect for a break away from the kids or as a fun family retreat, with an exciting range of activities to indulge in. Recently making the Top Ten Must Do’s in New Zealand, the Tutukaka coast consists of a stunning coastal backdrop rich in perfect sandy beaches, glorious coastal walks, splendid diving spots and some of the best fishing in the world - all just minutes away from amenities.
Where fishing dreams come true!
Tutukaka is perhaps best known as a big game fishing mecca, with dedicated fisher folk from all over the world flocking here to test their hand at the ocean’s largest fish.
You really are spoilt for choice when it comes to fishing charter operators to pick from, there are too many to mention here. Fishing charters are popular so it pays to book in advance.
If big game fishing is not your thing but you’d still like a bit of fishing action, then there are many stunning and secluded spots where you can fish from off the rocks or the beach or from a kayak. This is the perfect way to unwind amid glorious surroundings and maybe even catch dinner. What could be better?
Diving around the Tutukaka coast
If you love diving, then Tutukaka is an absolute must for you! The gateway to Poor Knights islands, which is a world renowned diving destination, Tutukaka boasts many first-rate diving operators.
You can choose from day ocean trips or liveaboard diving trips, taking you to explore the pristine waters around the Poor Knights or the Waikato or Tui wrecks. Winter diving in Tutukaka is absolutely stunning, with increased water clarity and less divers to contend with, your dive experience in the cooler months will be a memory to treasure.
Experience the breath-taking winter beauty of the Tutukaka Coast with coastal walks
Whether you like a challenging track or prefer something more sedate, Tutukaka has many great walking tracks to choose from – all with picture perfect scenery. We recommend the Tutukaka Lighthouse and Kukutauwhao Island walk, which has two walks to choose from, depending on your preferences.
The first walk is an easy 200m track to the southside of the Tutukaka headland. It takes around 10 minutes and gives you fabulous views out over the coast.
The second walk is sure to get your blood pumping, with some pretty steep inclines to tackle on the track up to the lighthouse! Taking you through picturesque native bush, to untouched, adorable beaches and past some of the country’s most stunning views, this walk is not to be missed. Make sure you have your camera charged!
Another highly recommended walk is the Whale Bay track, which is one the whole family can enjoy, with a well-maintained, easy track that takes around 30 minutes return. Whale Bay is a beach tailor-made for picnics and swimming – yes, even in winter!
Experience white sandy beaches: even better in the off season
It doesn’t matter what time of year you visit Tutukaka, the beaches here are beautiful in any season and you’re spoilt for choice.
Sandy bay and Matapouri are two surfing hot-spots and well worth the visit if you’re a keen surfie. These two beaches are great places to carve up the waves with a days’ surfing, so why not take advantage of the surf schools which operate here.
Even if you’re not into surfing, the beaches here are truly stunning, with sparkling white sand and picture-perfect views in every direction. Whether you’re after a romantic getaway or a holiday with the kids, Tutukaka beaches are a place to make memories!
Great cafés and restaurants
After a day relaxing on one of the many gorgeous beaches, diving the Poor Knights or grappling with a marlin, it’s great to end the day at one of the cafés or restaurants Tutukaka has on offer.
Whether you’re after a café meal, or the atmosphere of a pub, Indian meal or pizza, Ngunguru and Tutukaka townships have something to suit everyone’s tastes. Sample local produce and soak in the views!
