Northland’s best surf spot: stay and surf at Sandy Bay!
Looking for the hottest surf spot in Northland? You can’t go past Sandy Bay, Northland’s best surf spot for beginners, for old-hands and for competitive surfers.
Sandy Bay is well known as Northland’s best surf spot; it’s not unusual to encounter powerful rolling barrels providing excellent opportunities for all grades of surfer. There are also many peaks to choose from spread out along the beach, giving everyone space to find their own wave. Sandy Bay can get a bit crowded at times, as it’s close enough to Whangarei city for an easy day-trip, so be aware of other surfers and other swimmers in the water.
If you’re staying out at Sandy Bay for the weekend or longer however, take advantage of the sunset waves: when other surfers start to call it a day, enjoy the slowly emptying waters and grab yourself some clean surf with the most stunning backdrop. Who knows – you may even have some dolphins drop in on your set.
